SPANISH-WINE ÜBERSCOUT
Patrick Mata, who grew up working on vineyards in Spain, didn't speak any English
when he came to America six years ago for college. Now 26, Mata, who co-owns Olé
Imports in Westchester, New York, is perfectly bilingual—and dedicated to teaching
Americans about overlooked Spanish labels. He brings in more than 60 boutique
Spanish wines, many from up-and-coming regions like Yecla, in the southeast. A
fledgling winemaker, Mata is also launching Bellum, a late-harvest red from Yecla,
which debuts this fall. www.oleimports.com — Lindsey Whitton.

Patrick Mata will be your guide for this Spanish ‘tasting-tour’ and luncheon, featuring selections from highly celebrated winemaker Alberto Orte: Wine Spectator’s most awarded Spanish winemaker in the top 50 wines under $50 category for 2017!

Thursday, April 6, 2017, | 11:00 am -2:00 pm | White Bison

Patrick Mata has earned the well-deserved reputation of being one of the most charming and engaging personalities in the wine industry (those of you who joined us for last year’s Albariño seminar will certainly remember!). Patrick’s seminar this year will showcase the incredibly dynamic wines of his dear friend Alberto Orte, carefully paired with a delicious Spanish-inspired luncheon and of course Patrick’s own special Paella recipe! This will be a delicious and memorable journey, not to be missed.

Patrick Mata and Alberto Orte co-created Ole Imports, in 1999 with just 3 wines and a dream to bring traditional, authentic Spanish wines to the US market. Today they work with over 100 producers from all across the Iberian Peninsula and are widely known for representing wines of incredible value and quality. It is such a treat to have the vivacious and charismatic Patrick Mata in town again this year for the Taste of Vail.

Alberto’s family has been producing wine in Montilla for more than a century. Some of the most interesting wines that Orte produces today include Elo Monastrell from Yecla, an early-harvest Monastrell which shows astounding delicacy from a powerful region; Vara y Pulgar, a 100% Tintilla wine from Cadíz; and La Antigua Clássico from the Sierra de la Demanda mountain territory in Rioja. These are just a few of the wines we will highlight at the luncheon.

Come and get to know Spain, its diversity, and its complexity through the unparalleled winemaking of Alberto Orte.
